Issue #80: Bigger Than You Ever Done It (Plies Interview)
By Eric Perrin • Nov 11th, 2009 • Category: Interviews, Issue #80Plies no longer claims to be real. by now, we all know. From his 2007 debut The Real Testament to his follow-up The Definition of Real all the way to his third outing The RealIst, Fort Myers’ Plies has constantly re-iterated his realness. Now, with his brother Big Gates home from prison, Plies feels it’s about time to pivot from his once ubiquitous “real” philosophy and bring the world Goon Affiliated.
On his fourth album in 2 years, Plies is promising to do it bigger than he’s ever done it. He guarantees a classic or your money back, and is confident that his latest effort will be far better than any of its predecessors.
Issue #80: My Brother’s Keeper (Big Gates Interview)
By Julia Beverly • Nov 11th, 2009 • Category: Interviews, Issue #80This past weekend you hit the streets again. What was your mindset at the time you found out that you were gonna actually be released?
It felt like a dream, with me being in them conditions for so long, and the amount of pressure and problems that’s going on inside those places. I think everybody out there knows that [prison] isn’t the best conditions to be living in. So it’s just me coming out and seeing my brother, seeing the rest of my family and being able to be free. I can’t really describe the feeling – overwhelming joy is the best way to put it. It’s like winning the lottery for $500 million. How would you feel, you know what I mean? I really don’t think you could tell me.

By Randy Roper • Aug 6th, 2009 • Category: VideosPlies’ brother Big Gates recently got out of jail after spending the last three years behind bars for his involved in a club getting shot the fux up. Well, some magazine is putting Plies and Big Gates on their cover. I’m not sure what mag, but here’s some behind the scenes footage of the cover shoot.
Shouts out to photographer Hannibal Matthews, too. He’s a dope photographer. Whoever hired him to shoot their cover is a genius.
Plies – “Becky”
By Randy Roper • Jun 19th, 2009 • Category: Audio, Randy's PlaylistHere is the first single from Plies’ new album, Goon Affiliated, dropping in September. I could be wrong, but is Plies attempting to use “Becky” as a synonym for head? Damn, and I thought “whooty” was out of line.

Plies’ Brother Big Gates Released From Prison
By Julia Beverly • Apr 13th, 2009 • Category: News
Ronell Levatte a.k.a. Big Gates (above, pictured with his brother back in 2005) is the business mind behind Big Gates Records who convinced his brother Algernod (better known as Plies) to rap, linked up w/ Ted Lucas at Slip N Slide, and the rest is history. He says he felt “extremely joyful” upon his release last week and didn’t do anything right away, feeling like it was “a dream.” That moment has passed and this afternoon, Gates is perusing a luxury car dealership in Tampa to pick out an appropriate welcome-home whip (true to form, he didn’t want to say which dealership so as not to give them any “free promotion”).
In case you’re late, Gates has been serving time in Florida due to his alleged involvement with a shooting incident at a 2006 Plies & Lil Boosie show in Gainesville, FL. He was charged with six counts of attempted murder. Firearms were found in the vehicle he was driving, which was registered in his name (and he was a convicted felon already). According to Gates, after being confronted with 90 witnesses the state planned to call at his trial, he took a plea agreement of 3 years (I’m sure some of you would like to meet his lawyer) and although he has now been released, still will remain “heavily monitored” for several months.
Big Gates Records’ upcoming projects include a double CD from Plies, debut albums from R&B singer Chris J and R&B group Unique Image, and the development of a white rapper whom Gates calls “the greatest rapper alive” that he met while incarcerated.
For more details, look out for the full cover story with Gates & Plies in the 7 Year Anniversary edition of OZONE, in stores this May.
