"Yow mi nah lie! It did bashy!!" Straight gully only like a Jamaican concert can do it. I had never been to Club Tropix before, but from the provided parking (on some people’s front lawns) to the women (batty fi blind yu) I picked up the distinct feel of an island I moved from less than 3 years ago. Yu dun know, the camera man was in full effect, getting shots of women from every angle possible, making sure everything was seen using his patented flood light perched atop his camera. Unlike Caribbean Sunshine Lounge, there was unfortunately no peanut man, and I never had the joy of waiting through a bag of people who thought they could DJ. Nope. Showtime began at about 2:45 with one Jamaican comedian named Real Idiot, followed by a surprise guest appearance by the high-pitched Kip Rich. The women loved that still, but Kip Rich only stayed on for a few minutes, which just further served to whet everyone’s appetite for Elephant Man.
From out of nowhere, the grizzly, ghetto-bass voice was heard, "………SHIZZLE!! Mi seh di place pop down!! You couldn’t get one girl’s attention even if you were wearing a Gucci hat and a pair of Gucci Air Jordans (coincidentally there was a yout with the same combo). You know how Elly roll, all black Versace with 6 girls on stage. Yow, I must’ve learned about 12 different dances that night from the "online", and "drive-by", to the "sparkle" and the "praise Jesus"! Elly was doing his thing for about an hour straight all on top of speakers, and left 3 big holes in the clubs ceiling from punching it! He even did renditions of old Motown hits all packed tightly with his own slew of dancehall favorites. After all that excitement I had to borough my way through VIP where Marvelous from the Punisha Crew (big ups to Marvelous and Tom Jones, good looking out) gave me the chance to interview Jamaica’s number one DJ!
All we hear is Elephant Man and Wayne Marshall. How did you and Wayne Marshall link up?
Well, you dun know, we buck up ina King Jammy’s studio, I was recording a song and he said he wanted me and him to do a combo. I did it with him and I was going to King Jammy, he was going to King Jammy, we became friends, started rolling and started writing songs together.
There’s now a bigger crossover between hip-hop and dancehall music. When are you looking to be on a hip-hop record or vice versa?
Well yu dun know, anytime the Almighty thinks it should happen then it’ll happen. I have to look to my producers to drop the riddims first and then it can happen.
I’m still waiting for a Busta Rhymes and Elephant Man collaboration.
Yeah, you know, Elephant and Busta, Elephant and any one of them right now is murda! You dun know, I’m just waiting for the Almighty to tell me when it’s time.
I hear you bigging up a lot of the established artists and Grammy winners like Beenie Man and Shabba Ranks, are you trying to solidify your spot as a Grammy contender?
Well I’m working my best at it; I would love to reach that spot because that is everyone’s aim. To go out there and show that Jamaicans have talent. That’s where we want to be, with everybody achieving something.
Just out of curiosity, how does it feel to have all these people staring in your face night after night?
Well, it’s just work. I’m proud of myself because I’ve come a far way. It took hard work and dedication to reach here, so I don’t mind.
The conclusion? Anytime you have $30.00 under your couch and Elephant Man is in town, do yourself a favor and catch the show, and if you want to see pics of the event hit up mightypunisha.com. There’s where you can get an eyeful. But for now, only one word can describe my reaction to that event….SHIZZLE!!
